The Marshall University Thundering Herd football squad put on a show in an emotional anniversary game Friday night by defeating the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs 31-10 at Joan C. Edwards Stadium. The win locked Marshall into first place in the Conference USA East Division.
The Bulldogs drew first blood going up 7-0 in a first quarter where nothing seemed to be going right for the Thundering Herd. After 15 minutes of play, it looked like the boys in black and green would be in for a long night. However, Marshall would get their bearings straightened out in the second quarter scoring 17 unanswered points before halftime.
As has become an annual tradition, all former MU football players and coaches were invited to join the current team in taking the field. Unlike the standard high energy entrance featuring smoke machines and fireworks, the Sons of Marshall locked arms and walked onto the field in somber unity while a tribute to the 75 played on the video screens.
A mystical person might be apt to believe that unseen forces were at work on such a sentimental game as the Bulldogs would routinely be set back by unforced errors and blunders from fumbles to interceptions to blown snaps. After LA Tech’s opening score, they would never see the end zone again as the Herd would outscore them 31-3 over the remainder of the contest.
With LA Tech still at the top of the West Division, and Marshall at the top of the East Division, if both teams win out the season, they will play one another again in the conference championship. Marshall will next travel to the Charlotte 49ers on Nov. 23 at 3:30 p.m.
