Festival season 2024 has come to downtown Huntington, West Virginia. The live weekly concerts have started around the neighborhood and our first full-scale festival of the summer, Taco Fest, is back for its second year on May 18th at Harris Riverfront Park.

Taco Fest comes from Huntington resident Bleu Young, who says that tacos seem to be a popular food in the Jewel City. “I’ve lived here for a while and noticed that one thing the whole town can agree on is good food. Also, tacos have no parameters. No matter who you are, somewhere down the line, there’s a taco you will like.”

The inaugural festival in 2023 was a huge success, but Young says they have a number of improvements planned for this year from doubling the number of food vendors to streamlining the ordering process. Ideally, more people will be served the same quality of food in a shorter amount of time this year.

Young grew up in the foster care system, so it is a full-circle moment for him to partner with Western Regional Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), a local child advocacy group, to present Taco Fest 2024.

“I know how it feels to be a child in the system, so having a chance to possibly impact even one kid’s life to show them it’s not all bad and it gets better,” Young said. “That even though they might start out in a bad situation, they can make their own dreams come true!”

Mr. Young said it’s been an exceptional experience working with Kim Runyon Wilds, program director for Western Regional CASA to help #ChangeAChildsStory. “She’s really been a big help. [CASA] will have at least 14 volunteers at Taco Fest, which is a huge help. I’m happy that she is just as excited to work with us as we are to work with her.”

Taco Fest 2024 will feature more than 20 local vendors, with over half serving food. There will also be music, inflatables, a mechanical bull, and a game van with a Fortnite contest.

You will be able to purchase food, as well as flavored margaritas and your favorite Mexican beers, and non-alcoholic beverages. This year will feature a raffle to benefit Western Regional CASA with the winner receiving a set of Apple Pro Vision googles.

There will be a taco eating contest with divisions for kids and adults. Prizes range from local gift cards to a Nintendo Switch. All contest participants will receive a free T-shirt courtesy of Casa Grande.
