It looked like the 2022 installment of the Mountain State Derby would end in another draw on Saturday night before Milo Yosef for Marshall notched the game-winning goal in the 85th minute to take down the West Virginia Mountaineers 1-0.

A massive crowd of 2,735 at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex was treated to a matchup that met its billing on Saturday night. The rivalry proved to be as evenly matched as the recent history would indicate (1-1-1 the last three years). The crowd would go down as the second largest in the stadium history.

While the Thundering Herd defense lived up to its stellar reputation from the opening whistle, the offense was stifled by the Mountaineers for most of the game notching only a handful of shots and only one on goal in the first 85 minutes. However, with 5:12 left on the clock, Yosef took the match on his shoulders and buried a shot into the back of the net to ultimately seal the game.

This was the 25th edition of the Mountain State Derby, which was first played in 1983. West Virginia owns the all-time series 16-7-2, but have not beaten the Herd since 2020 in Morgantown. This was the first matchup with both teams as members of the Sun Belt Conference and the result was good enough to earn Marshall 3 points in the race for the regular season conference title.

The Thundering Herd will next travel to Conway, South Carolina, to take on the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on September 30, 2022 in another Sun Belt Conference matchup. They return to Huntington to host Robert Morris on October 4.
