No. 11 Marshall men’s soccer went toe-to-toe in a heavyweight fight with No. 2 Pittsburgh Friday night in front of a massive crowd of 1,879 fans at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex and came out victorious 2-1. This was the highest-ranked opponent to fall to the Thundering Herd in program history.

Matthew Bell scored the first goal for the Herd in the 14th minute and then struck again with what would turn out to be the game-winner in the 26th minute. Pitt turned on the aggression, and the physicality, in the second half and managed to get on the scoreboard in the 72nd minute, but they could not equalize before time ran out.

It was a special night at “The Vet” as pregame featured a flyover by Marshall’s Bill Noe Flight School. The Marshall University Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2022 was also in attendance and recognized at halftime.

Marshall next heads to Cleveland State on September 7th then returns to Huntington to face Pacific on September 11th.
