No. 5 Marshall men’s soccer defeated the James Madison Dukes 2-0 Tuesday night at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex before a raucous crowd of 1,675 in attendance.

Despite the score, it was a back-and-forth slugfest that did not lack for physicality with the two teams combining for six yellow cards, three each way.

Matthew Bell scored the first goal for the Thundering Herd with one minute left in the first half to give Marshall the 1-0 lead at the break. The game stayed close in the second half until Joao Souza put the game away with a second goal in the 52nd minute.

The win was good enough for Marshall to clench the no. 2 seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament behind the Kentucky Wildcats. The Herd will face a rematch against 7-seed James Madison on Sunday in the SBC Tournament, kickoff will be at 3:00 p.m..

Marshall finishes the regular season 10-2-3 and ranked no. 5 in the nation. The Thundering Herd has now been ranked in the top 25 nationally since October 15, 2019.
