In a back-and-forth contest that will surely be the talk of college basketball for a while to come, the Thundering Herd fell in overtime to the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners before a packed house of green-clad fanatics at the Cam Henderson Center Saturday night.
The game sported numerous ties and lead changes on the way to a 92-92 draw at the end of regulation time coming off what was arguably the wildest 7 seconds of basketball this season.
Marshall was down 92-88 when Jon “Jonny Buckets” Elmore hit a 3-pointer from the parking lot and UTSA did the only thing they shouldn’t do in that situation: foul Elmore in the process of shooting. Mr. Buckets then drained the following shot from the charity stripe to knot the game at 92 with 4.4 seconds remaining.

When San Antonio mishandled the inbounds pass, it looked like the boys in green and white might be able to put the game away in regulation, but the buzzer-beater wouldn’t drop. The Roadrunners went on to outscore the Thundering Herd 24-12 in overtime to set the final score.
Marshall is now 13-10 on the season and 6-4 in conference play. The Herd will next travel to take on the North Texas Mean Green on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 8 p.m. at the Super Pit in Denton, TX.
Fun fact: Marshall and North Texas are the only programs in a major conference (Power 5 and Group of 5) to have kelly green as their predominant color.
