Marshall Thundering Herd football fans got their first look at the new turf at Joan C. Edwards Stadium Saturday during the 2022 Fan Day. Hundreds of fans made their way out into the sun to check out the field after getting their official schedule posters signed by the team on the West Concourse.
The previous turf at “The Joan” was installed eight years ago, which is nearly a full lifespan, according to the manufacturer AstroTurf. The need to replace the conference logos on the field also supplied a good reason for a new carpet in the stadium.
Marshall University Athletics conducted a fan poll on Twitter earlier in the summer to decide on the design for the new turf and fans overwhelmingly picked black end zones with Marshall written in white and outlined in Kelly green. There are also “75” logos on each sideline to honor the 75 people killed in the Marshall plane crash on November 14, 1970. “It (the 75) might be my favorite part of the new field,” MU Athletic Director Christian Spears told WSAZ News in June.
The Thundering Herd football squad will open play on the new field on September 3, 2022 at 3:30 p.m. ET against the Norfolk State Spartans. For more information, go to www.HerdZone.com.
