It felt like “deja vu all over again” for Marshall fans on Saturday night as, for the second season in a row, the Thundering Herd football team fell to the North Carolina State Wolfpack by a score of 37-20; this time before a packed house at Joan C. Edwards Stadium on Reggie Oliver memorial night.
A number of distinguished current and former members of the Herd showed out to honor the late Reggie Oliver, quarterback for the “Young Thundering Herd.” Oliver, who was played by Arlen Escarpeta in the film “We Are Marshall,” is perhaps best known for leading the Herd to its first victory after the plane crash that devastated the Huntington community and nearly wiped out the Marshall football program altogether. Oliver completed a last-second touchdown pass to Terry Gardner to seal a 15-13 win over the Xavier Musketeers on September 25, 1971 (read the original Herald-Dispatch post game coverage HERE).
In attendance to honor Reggie Oliver at the NC State game were such iconic Herd coaches as Jack Lengyel and Red Dawson, who were played by Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Fox respectively. The 2018 Thundering Herd is now 2-1 on the season and will open conference play next week, September 29, at Western Kentucky.
