Marshall Thundering Herd football stand-out safety Malik Gant has passed away at the age of 25, the Gant Family has announced. Gant’s body was found in Miami, Florida, on May 25, 2023, only four days prior to his 26th birthday.

Gant was a fan favorite for the Green and White for two seasons from 2017-2018, before declaring for the NFL Draft and signing with the New England Patriots. Gant came to Marshall as a walk-on and was redshirted his freshman year. He went on to earn a scholarship from then-Coach Doc Holliday following spring camp 2017.

Upon learning of Gant declaring for the NFL Draft in 2019, Coach Holliday said, “This young man has been a great ambassador for our Marshall University football program the last few years. He protected ‘The M’ every time he suited up. Best of luck to Malik Gant as he prepares to play at the next level. Proud of you!”

The Gant Family released a statement saying, in part, “Malik was a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many with his kindness, charisma, and unwavering spirit. He will be remembered as a loving son, a cherished brother, a devoted grandson, a valued teammate, and a dear friend to countless individuals. His memory will forever live in our hearts.”
