Opa! Huntington’s St. George Greek Orthodox Church’s annual Greek Festival is back for its 40th year September 23rd and 24th.
Located at the corner of 7th Street and 11th Avenue in South Side, St. George invites the public to experience the culture and ancestry of Greece and the Orthodox Christian faith. According to St. George’s website, the festival aims to celebrate the heritage and traditions of Greek Orthodoxy that are centuries old but still contemporary in their focus.
St. George Greek Orthodox Church was originally constructed in the 1940s not long after a Parish Council was created in Huntington, WV, according to TheClio.com. The congregation includes native-born Greek people, converts to Orthodoxy, and Eastern Orthodox Christians from Albanian, Russian, Lebanese, Syrian, and Ethiopian descent.
The 2022 Greek Festival will feature traditional homemade Greek food, drink, music, dance, and art as well as Greek-themed merchandise and religious keepsakes for sale. There will also be tours of the 80-year-old church guided by members of the leadership.
The festival will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 23 and conclude at 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 24, 2022. For more information, visit St. George’s website.
