It was a slobber-knocker Saturday afternoon at Joan C. Edwards Stadium as the Marshall Thundering Herd defeated the Georgia State Panthers 28-23 on Senior Night.
Georgia State played like they had nothing to lose as they went up to a 10-0 lead in the first half with Marshall struggling to get their footing on an emotional afternoon that saw the final home game for 20 Thundering Herd seniors. However, the Herd offense would soon get cooking and reel off 14 unanswered points from two touchdowns by Rasheen Ali and Khalan Laborn to take a 14-10 MU lead into the half.
The Panthers re-took the lead 17-14 to end the 3rd quarter, but Marshall would take it back for good a few minutes later with a touchdown pass from Cam Fancher to Charles Montgomery.
The Thundering Herd defense made an afternoon of feasting in the Panthers’ backfield recording back-to-back-to-back sacks to preserve the lead in the fourth quarter. Not to be outdone, both of the Herd’s main running threats on offense recorded over 100 yards on the ground and at least a touchdown apiece. Khalan Laborn put the game away with the Herd’s final touchdown of the afternoon with 5:31 left to play.
This completes the Thundering Herd’s regular season with a record of 8-4 overall and 4-3 in the Sun Belt Conference. They now await the announcement of their bowl selection opponent and location.
